Brownie Disaster of 2012

Our area is hosting the missionary conference so I signed up to bring one dozen brownies or cookies.  I needed a square pint container for my math lesson the next day so I decided to find a recipe that included heavy cream, since that is what normally comes in that type of container.  I had a fantastic recipe for caramel brownies with a chocolate ganache frosting, so I got all the extra ingredients, like caramels and chocolate chips, at the store.  I baked the caramel brownies to the exact specifications in the recipe.  They needed to be just barely done since they needed to cool in the fridge for an hour and a half. (Mistake #1.)  Once they were cool I drizzled the chocolate over the brownies and allowed them to cool yet again.

I pulled them out of the fridge at 9 pm to cut and plate them and get them to the person that would deliver them the next morning.  Now, I know many people don't like the edges of the brownies but that happens to be my favorite part.  Sooo, I cut around all the edges to keep for myself and divided the center portion into a dozen and a half squares. (Mistake #2). I pulled out an edge piece to taste test and they were amazing!  So gooey and caramely and chocolatey.  And of course a little crunchy, but I like that part.  I proceeded to pull out the rest of the brownies with the spatula and place them on the plates.  I had plated about 5 when I reached the very center brownies.  They kind of fell apart as I was scooping them out.  I cut off a piece of that brownie to taste test to see if they even resembled brownies and just needed to refrigerate them for longer, but no luck.  They were practically batter covered in caramel and chocolate.  I proceeded to continue to pull out brownies and taste test small pieces to see if somehow I could scrounge up 12 brownies out of the pan for the missionaries.  The outer two to three inches around the pan were salvageable.  The only problem was that I cut off all the edges!  Now I didn't even have enough to serve.  And to top it off I thought I was going to throw up from eating so many pieces of rich brownie.  So now I was nauseous AND mad!  I was so mad and so sick that I never wanted to see another brownie again and just took the lot of them and chucked them in the garbage.  Even the delicious edges - that's how mad I was.

I called my neighbor in charge (at 9:45. they were due at 9:30.  i go to bed at 10 so I can get up at 5 for the gym.) and told her about the situation as I was rummaging through my cupboards for the jar of oatmeal chocolate bar mix one of my students gave me at Christmas.  I was dumping it into the mixer and putting the messy pans into the sink to soak so I could reuse them for the new dessert while I called her.  She was hugely sorry for my predicament but said not to worry about it.  Another person had thought she personally needed to bring five dozen cookies and not the entire ward bring five dozen cookies so we were well ahead of our dessert requirement.  I was relieved about this but so tired and mad and nauseous that I didn't even bother to try and dump the oatmeal bar ingredients back into the jar or another container to save for later that I just dumped that into the garbage can too.  So now I am just brownie-less and oatmeal bar-less and cookie-less and just tired from staying up late cooking and worrying about the cooking.

The End.
