Day 190: Tuesday, May 19 - Not More Testing!
What do you get when you take 7 teachers from the same school, 4000 tests, and a bunch of red pens? Gossip central. Well, just kidding about the gossip part. I would prefer to call it a discussion on the goings on at the school. Our school is currently part of a BYU study to see if the math training at the schools is working to improve student thinking. We are in the control group, so we don't get the classes. That means they hope our students score poorly on the test so as to not screw up the statistical data. We spent the entire night scoring the same problem. We first worked out the problem ourselves, then practiced grading some practice problems together, then graded some on our own and compared scores as a group. Then we got some real tests and had to compare our answers with a partner before moving on. They were serious about having reliable scoring. We got to leave once all our problems were scored, which ended up being at about 9:00 - a good, solid 5 hours. Thankfully the work was easy, the company was fun, and the money was worth it!
