Mike was in SLC to jam on the guitar with a friend so I headed to the bookstore and the library ttake care of a few errands.
*Here is where I go off on a tangent: I had to buy the new Fablehaven book, and while I decided to buy The Help since I am #107 on the hold list at the library, and it seems like a good enough book to buy. I returned some books at the library - Shanghai Girls, Fire (which I liked but incidentally I liked Graceling better), The Little Lady Agency, and I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You (one of the Gallagher Girls spy school novels written by the author of ) to name a few I have read and enjoyed recently. End of tangent.*
While I was there I got to thinking about my love for reading and when it all began. I know I always enjoyed a good book when I was younger, like I Can Do It Myself and The Pokey Little Puppy, but when did I have that Aha! moment that started it all? For me, it was when I was in third grade. I read On the Banks of Plum Creek, one of The Little House on the Prairie books, in one evening. I was sitting on my favorite brown reading chair in the living room, and I remember being so proud of myself because I actually finished an entire chapter book in one night. After that, I devoured books. I finished the rest of The Little House books, and then moved onto some other favorite series, which got me thinking of a new question - what were some of my favorite books to read back then? In elementary school I just loved The Little House on the Prairie series, Anne of Green Gables, the original Nancy Drew books (which is where my love of mysteries comes from - thanks Grandma!), Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Giver, and The Baby-sitter's Club, all of which I still have here or back at home. In middle school and high school my favorite book was The Hobbit. I have read it so many times over the course of my life! I also loved Sweet Valley High, The Work and the Glory, Mary Higgins Clark books, The Cat Who... books, . I developed a greater love of fantasy with the Xanth series (A Spell for Chameleon anyone?), The Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Dealing with Dragons), and the Sword of Shanarra. (And I know there are more!)
When did you first fall in love with reading (or anything else for that matter)? And what books did you love as a child?

I LOVE reading. I will check out 15 books from the library and devour them. I don't buy books and I rarely re-read a book. I don't have an author that I love. Mostly-I go the library and peruse. If it looks good, I'll pick it up. I've taken a few cues from you and checked out a couple of books you suggested-good reads. My love started in 3rd as well. I was in the Blue bird group-highest reading level- and was reading Ramona Quimby books. My mom used to read to me when I was a kid. I like mysteries, scary, young adult, sappy romance, fluff, narrative dramas, and just about anything. Growing up my favorite books were: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Island of Blue Dolphins, Ramona, Go Ask Alice, Great Gatsby, and a bunch more. I also really like historical fiction/non-fiction. I once had to read a book about the Hoover Dam and I thought it was going to be so boring, but I really enjoyed it.
I just read The Help and really enjoyed it.
I also love to read and have since a kid. The first chapter books I remember reading on my own were the Ramona Quimby ones by Beverly Cleary. I loved them. I also read Little House on the Prairie, The Boxcart Children, and The Babysitters Club. There's few things better in life then curling up with a really good book at night!
I remember laying in bed at night and my Mom would read with me. I don't remember how old I was. I loved reading the Molly- American Girl series. I would want to stay up later than our bedtime, so I would have to sit in the hall so my little sister could go to sleep.
I am excited for summer so I can devote my day to reading!
I LOVED the Nancy Drew books - and my mom introduced me to the Cat who books. I think the first time a book actually affected me was when I was in elementary school and my mom read me Where the Red Fern Grows. I think that was the last book we read together...Your post made me want to pick up all these great old books!
