Day 273: Monday, August 10

After another lazy morning, we went to Pensacola Beach (why does Mike have to ruin awesome pictures by making faces?)

to visit Fort Pickens. This fort has been around since the 1820's. The fort was built to defend Pensacola Bay and the navy yard. During the civil war, it retained support for the union amidst states that were seceding one by one. During the war, the union sent a large army of soldiers from New York to defend against attacks by the confederate soldiers. In fact, the confederates couldn't even get through the ranks of the New York soldiers, who were quickly becoming overheated while wearing wool uniforms in the humidity. Renovations were made for the increasingly new technology, and the fort became a national park after the development of atomic bombs and missiles made it obsolete. Major damage occurred to the fort during Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis. In fact, the jail portion of the fort was inaccessible due to Hurricane damage. Mike and my dad, who were definitely in heaven with all the history, were especially sad to miss out on seeing the jail cells where Geronimo and his people were held.

Mike and I also got to spend an evening alone. As much fun as it is to be with my family (we wouldn't trade it for the world), it was nice to have the pool to ourselves.
