Day 229: Saturday, June 27
About a month or so ago, I went to the monthly enrichment activity. It was on smart shopping tips, so I figured it would be well worth my time, given that I love to shop. Needless to say, I was a little upset to learn that it was all about couponing! In case you didn't know, Utah county is obsessed with couponing. They are always bragging about all the money they saved on groceries that month or how they subscribe to six newspapers per week. I have always been the person to make fun of those ladies wandering around in the grocery store with giant binders of baseball card sheet protectors full of coupons. I still don't fully buy into the idea because I don't know if I can justify the cost of the newspaper subscription and I think it might take more time that it is worth. But today I thought I might try my first experience being a couponer. It was nothing big, just one of the coupons Albertson's spits out with your receipt.
On Monday when Mike ran to the grocery store, he got a coupon for $2 off your $10 produce purchase. Not a bad deal and it was worth it since I had to go there and buy produce anyway. So I get to the check-out counter and hand the cashier my coupon. She takes one look at it and says, "This coupon expired on May 17." What?!?! I just got it on Monday! I told her that, but said that it wasn't a big deal if they couldn't uphold it. (They stressed in the class that those who abuse the coupon system will ruin it for everyone. Now I wouldn't want to be that person, would I?) The cashier shared the situation with a neighboring cashier, they both were amazed, and she called in for a manager approval. My first official couponing experience was a bust. I might not be trying it again in the near future.
