Day 113: Wednesday, March 4 - Fairies Aren't Real...Except the Tooth Fairy

Overheard by L. while working on All About Books, a book that written to teach all about a subject: "Fairies aren't real. Except the tooth fairy. And she is just a person with wings."

A little later by M.: "Mrs. B--, is the tooth fairy real? Or is it just my parents?"

Mrs. B--: "I think you should ask your parents that question."

L: "I know she is real. I lost a tooth once and the tooth fairy found it on the counter and left me a dollar in its place!"

Yes, L., there is a tooth fairy. She exists as certainly as lost teeth exist. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no tooth fairy. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
(Adapted from Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.)
